Disagreements and Inaccuracies on the Concept of “Terrorism”: Questions to the Traditional Theoretical Approaches

Abstract

This paper states that that the alleged conceptual vagueness of terrorism –giving rise to a number of inaccuracies that hinder its understanding in the opinion of scholars– should be revised since the authors have actually established the minimum elements to understand this phenomenon; from their perspective, terrorism occurs through violent and deliberate attacks perpetrated by small groups that target civilians, with important public and psychological effects. In other words, a good number of specialists assure that this concept has not been clearly defined, but they were able to establish what it means in practice. Some of the most renowned and cited works by the expert academic community on terrorism are studied and compared to test this hypothesis.
