Lean Manufacturing: A Strategy for Sustainable Water Production

Abstract

This study presents strategies for continuous improvement and sustainability in the Drinking Water Treatment Plant of Antonio José Camacho University Institution, employing Lean Manufacturing tools. The objective is to positively impact critical variables such as waste, consumption, plant capacity, and treated water quality. A thorough characterization of the plant was conducted, identifying existing challenges with water waste and product quality emerging as primary concerns. Utilizing tools such as process diagram, Jidoka, Value Stream Mapping, Root Cause Diagram, FMEA, visual control Andon, and autonomous maintenance, solutions were proposed to enhance plant efficiency, reduce operating costs, and mitigate associated environmental issues, thereby enabling the plant to accommodate future growing demands. Additionally, energy consumption was evaluated, and measures to reduce it were suggested. The results of implementing these improvements demonstrate clear benefits in terms of costs savings and enhanced well-being for the university and its students.
