Eficiencia en el sector bancario colombiano (1989 - 2003)
Abstract
This Article analyzes the banks efficiency in Colombia, through the revision of the efficiency literature and the regulatory structure, and the evaluation of banks antecedents for the I-1989 to I- 2004 quarterly period. The analyzed facts show an incipient tendency to sector consolidation after financial crises episode, which reflects the participation of the sector production in the economy and it' s profitability.
On the other hand, the public firms among the major part of the studied period were less efficient in rationalizing their expenses and costs, but apparently a break point exists since the financial crises. Finally, important efficiency dispersion was found i n collocation portfolio of banks, in the beginning for circumstances like financial reform and social security, reducing the inefficiency in the collocation portfolio, and it's deterioration after the economic recession, where the inefficiency in the recuperation portfolio is increased.
