Assessment of Productive Efficiency in Healthcare Service Providers in Caldas

Keywords: Data Envelopment Analysis, DEA, Productive Efficiency, COVID-19, Hospital Institutions

Abstract

Healthcare service providers worldwide have faced a challenging scenario due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This situation has sparked interest in studying efficiency and productivity to improve decision-making and increase hospitals’ responsiveness, optimizing the resources available to each institution to adequately serve their patients, despite these resources generally being scarce. To achieve this, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the Malmquist index were used to evaluate the performance of fourteen hospital institutions in Caldas with ICU beds between 2020 and 2021.Among the main findings during the analysis period is a 4.6 % improvement in hospital performance, although some institutions are observed to have moved away from the frontier. Additionally, a descriptive analysis determined an increase in the number of recovered patients and those requiring hospitalization. However, there was a decrease in patients needing ICU bed service and total deaths. It was found that the majority of deceased patients had comorbidities and pre-existing medical conditions.
